Living in the Texas Hill Country

As a girl blessed to have been born in Texas, but raised all over the world,
I think I know a little about what’s out there. I’ve seen architecture in Rome,
ruins in Mexico, snow in the mountains of Wyoming, and waves in California.
I was raised around the film business in an artsy family that can only be
described as chaotic, but amazing. I have worked in Los Angeles in the fast
paced world of fashion where your name means more than your brain. How
did I end up back in Texas? I asked myself many times "what am I doing"?
Until you have been here you have no idea what I’m talking about, but as
John Steinbeck once wrote: "I have said that Texas is a state of mind, but I
think it is more than that. It is a mystique closely approximating a religion.
And this is true to the extent that people either passionately love Texas or
passionately hate it and, as in other religions, few people dare to inspect it
for fear of losing their bearings in mystery or paradox. But I think there will
be little quarrel with my feeling that Texas is one thing. For all its enormous
range of space, climate, and physical appearance, and for all the internal
squabbles, contentions, and strivings, Texas has a tight cohesiveness
perhaps stronger than any other section of America. Rich, poor, Panhandle,
Gulf, city, country, Texas is the obsession, the proper study and the passionate
possession of all Texans. Austin Texas, the Gateway to the Hill Country, is the
best place to start, but be prepared for some culture shock. Texans do things
their way, on their clock, with a subtle disregard for the way the rest of the
world thinks things should be done. People seem to live very calmly and in
tune with their environment with a live and let live attitude. Many local mom
and pop businesses thrive, with little room, or want for the billboards and
neon lights of most other places. The Texas Hill Country is a lifestyle, a state
of mind, rather than just a place on the map. The locals guard the secrets of
her beauty so well that the rest of the country has heard just a whisper of her
existence. An unknown writer of the 19th century once described the Hill Country
as "Spring with its wavin' green grass and heaps of sweet-smellin flowers on every
hill and dale. Then will come sultry Summer, with her shimmer in' heat-waves on the
baked horizon; and Fall with her yellow harvest-moon and the hills growin' brown
and golden under a sinkin' Sun; and finally Winter, with its bitin', whinin' wind, and
all the land will be mantled with snow" And for all those interested in green living,
Davy Crochet once wrote, "I must say as to what I have seen of Texas, it is the
garden spot of the world. The best land and the best prospects for health I ever
saw, and I do believe it is a fortune to any man to come here. There is a world of
country here to settle. "There is also no shortage of things to do. Austin, and the
surrounding Hill Country is no desert. The land is lush with green rolling hills cut by
rivers and lakes. Take your family for a long afternoon float down the crystal clear
Guadalupe, or go water-skiing out at Lake Travis. If you'd rather enjoy the land,
take a tour at a local hill Country Winery, or hike around during the spring wildflower
season, when the hills are set ablaze in color. The food is not bad either. There is
your fair share of fried chicken and tons of BBQ, but the area seems to be a mecca for
the gourmet inclined health conscious. "Texas does not, like any other region, simply
have indigenous dishes, it proclaims them. It congratulates you on your arrival, at
having escaped from the slop pails of the other 49 states." (Alistair Cooke of the
BBC on Texas cuisine in The Americans.) So I find that Austin and the Hill Country is
a diamond in the rough and just perfect that way. I find enough hustle and bustle
to be successful with just the right mix of slow southern charm to keep me intrigued.
