The Cigar Lounge, the Sumo League, and What They Taught Me About Wimberley
After years of living in Wimberley and selling property throughout the Hill Country, I’ve gotten to know the faces, names, and stories of so many local characters. But last week I found a world within our small town that was too good to keep secret.
Next door to Benco Provisions — the local, family-owned coffee shop where my son is working this summer — sits the Wimberley Cigar Lounge. I’m not a cigar smoker, so I’d never had a reason to walk in. But I kept noticing people I recognized drifting over there after they picked up their coffee, so I followed.
A Room I Didn’t Know Existed
It’s well done inside. Local art on the walls, antique furniture, the unhurried feel of an old-school lounge. There are humidors for drop-ins, and then there are the membership humidors — and that’s where it gets interesting. Those belong to the regulars, the people who’ve made this their place, their ritual, their community within the community.
And then there’s the leaderboard: Japanese sumo wrestling. Totally unexpected. The regulars don’t just come in for a cigar and conversation — they have a sumo fantasy league and gather around live broadcasted bouts. They know the history, the honor, and the tradition behind a sport that goes back centuries in Japan. And because they’re sitting together, cigars in hand, returning week after week, they’re building real connection, friendship, and community.
I knew these people from other parts of local life, but I didn’t know this part of their world. Walking into it reminded me why I love this small town.
What This Has to Do With Real Estate
